Union Malleable Iron Works, Circa 1940
Union Malleable Iron Works.
Founded in 1872, the company was established in Moline for the express purpose of furnishing castings to Deere & Company. Deere Vice President Charles Deere, son of John Deere, served as one of the company’s organizers. This is a view of Union Malleable in East Moline, circa 1940. The Mississippi River and Bettendorf, Iowa, can be seen in the upper left corner. The factory was eventually demolished, and a new, modern, all-electric foundry was built next to the original location in November of 1968. The smaller building seen in the foreground of the photo is now a ball field. The location is near the current John Deere Archives.
